What Is the Victorian Hot Water Replacement Scheme?

As part of the wider Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program aimed at reducing carbon emissions, the Victorian Government Hot Water Replacement Scheme is a great way to take advantage of energy rebates available to all Victorian residents and businesses.

Heating hot water in your home for showers, baths, dishwashers, and doing laundry can take up around 18% of your energy bills, and for commercial properties it can be double this. This percentage can soar if you’re using an older, more inefficient kind of water heater.

With this new scheme, you can replace your old electric or gas water heating system with a heat pump hot water heater or a solar-powered hot water system. You could receive up to $1,190 in rebates against the cost of a new system.

Who Is Eligible for the Victorian Hot Water Rebate?

The amount of rebate you can receive will vary according to the kind of hot water heating system you already have and the type of system you want to install.

To assess your eligibility, we’ll look at factors such as how efficient the new heat pump is, how much energy you’ll be able to save, and the rating of the heat pump in kW.

The price of the VEU certificate is also taken into consideration, and you must be a resident of Victoria. The property must be older than 2 years, valued under $3m, and the heating system you have needs to be an inefficient gas or electric type.

Your household income should also be under $210k. (This is for the extra Solar Victoria Rebate)

What Types of Hot Water Systems Are Eligible?

Included in the scheme are two different kinds of hot water systems: a heat pump hot water heater or a solar-powered hot water system. You can get a discount when you choose to install either of these options.

For heat pumps, you can choose an integrated system which is easier to install and combines the heat pump and water tank into a single, compact unit. There’s also a split system, which places the heat pump away from the tank in a separate unit usually outside of the home.

A solar water heater is the second option, and it consists of a solar collector placed on your roof perfectly positioned to capture the most solar rays. You can choose from a close-coupled system to heat your water with solar, or opt for a pumped system in your home for efficient hot water heating.

How Much Can You Save with the Hot Water Rebate VIC?

When you choose to upgrade your hot water heating systems, you can save hundreds of dollars every year on your energy bills, meaning the new installation will pay for itself over the years you have it installed.

By upgrading your hot water system it’s estimated you can save around $100-$200 each year, and by improving the heating system with one of the new more efficient systems, you could potentially save $600 per year, more in colder areas of Australia. The heat pump rebates in Victoria are generally less than the solar system rebate, but the overall hot water system price will depend on the model you choose.

If you’re replacing an electric heating system with a heat pump or solar-boosted system, your rebate could be anywhere from $840-$1,190. When you choose to replace your gas system with either of the options, rebates can vary between $490-$700.

    Why Choose Heat Pump Systems?

A heat pump for your hot water is the most efficient design available which saves you money and also dramatically reduces carbon emissions. This is because they can heat water with 60-75% less electricity than a regular heating system. Choosing an affordable heat pump hot water system in Victoria cuts your bills and also helps the environment.

Heat pumps are compact and consist of a heat pump unit as well as a storage tank. They may be split or the heat pump can be located where the tank is. The way a heat pump works is by taking heat from the air that surrounds it, much like an air conditioner, and then heats the water in the tank with it.

You should choose the kind of heat pump that’s the right size for your family’s needs.

    Environmental Benefits of Switching

The Victorian Government is aiming to meet an emissions reduction target by 2030, and electrifying homes for their heating and hot water needs is a key part of that.

Since the introduction of the Victorian Energy Upgrades

(VEU) program in 2009, 2.2 million Victorian homes and businesses have benefited from the wealth of rebates on offer, transforming the state into a more energy efficient place to live and work.

Between the years of 2022-25, the VEU program as a whole will have saved almost 30m tonnes of carbon emissions, which is the same as removing 8.5m vehicles from the roads for an entire year!

By taking advantage of the rebates on offer for hot water systems, you’re not only saving money on energy bills, but you’re also playing your part to make Victoria a more sustainable state.

Why Upgrade Your Hot Water System?

Thinking about upgrading your hot water system? Here’s why it’s a smart move—especially with the heat pump hot water rebate VIC making it more affordable than ever. Thanks to the Victorian Government Hot Water Replacement Scheme, households across Victoria can now switch to energy-efficient systems and enjoy lower energy bills while reducing their environmental footprint.

But let’s talk numbers—because who doesn’t love saving money? Heat pump hot water systems are two to three times more efficient than traditional electric water heaters. Instead of generating heat directly (which guzzles energy), they simply move heat from the air around them, making them a far smarter choice.

Here’s the kicker: A standard electric water heater uses around 3,493 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy each year.

A heat pump system, on the other hand, uses just 866 kWh for the same amount of hot water. That’s a whopping 75% less energy!

According to Energy.gov, a family of four can save roughly
550 a year by switching from an electric water heater to a heat pump system.

So, if you’re ready to cut down on energy bills and do your bit for the planet, now’s the perfect time to take advantage of the Victorian Government Hot Water Replacement Scheme and the heat pump hot water rebate VIC.
