Energy-Efficient Office & Retail Lighting: What Actually Saves Money in 2026

Most advice about office lighting is written to sell fittings. This guide is the other thing: the numbers. What old fluorescent lighting actually costs to run, what an LED layout uses instead, the light levels that keep a workspace comfortable and compliant, and — at the end — where the NSW scheme fits if you want most of the upgrade paid for. We install this equipment every week as an accredited provider, so the figures below are the ones we use ourselves.

What your current lighting costs to run

A typical twin-tube fluorescent fitting draws around 80W once ballast losses are counted. Its LED replacement — a panel or batten — draws 20–36W for the same or better light; the scheme-approved panels we install run at 25W. Run that fitting 10 hours a weekday and the fluorescent uses roughly 210kWh a year against the LED’s 65–95kWh. At 35c/kWh, that’s $40–50 a year, per fitting, every year — before counting tube replacements and ballast failures, which LEDs simply don’t have.

The worked example: a 20-fitting office

Take a small office or shop floor with 20 twin-tube troffers, lights on 10 hours a weekday at 35c/kWh. Fluorescent: about 4,200kWh a year, roughly $1,470 in lighting energy. The 25W scheme-approved panels we install: 1,300kWh, roughly $455. The upgrade removes about $1,000 a year from the power bill — and under the NSW scheme, the fittings themselves cost a fraction of retail to install. Change the assumptions — longer hours, more fittings, higher rates — and the saving scales with them; lighting that runs longer saves more.

Workplace light levels that actually work

Brightness isn’t the goal — the right level is. Under Australian lighting standards guidance, general office tasks are commonly lit to around 320 lux at the desk, detailed work higher, and retail display areas brighter again — often 500 lux and up where product needs to stand out. Old fluorescent fitouts frequently miss these levels as tubes age and yellow; LED panels hold their output for years, light more evenly across the space, and remove the flicker that aging tubes and ballasts introduce.

Watts per square metre — the efficiency yardstick

Designers measure lighting efficiency in watts per square metre. Older commercial office lighting fitouts often run 10–15 W/m²; a well-designed LED layout typically lands between 4 and 7 W/m² for the same light levels — which is why LED retrofits routinely cut lighting energy use by more than half, and why modern layouts sit comfortably inside the Building Code’s energy allowances. Current approved panels deliver in the range of 120–135 lumens per watt — the ones we install run 126 — which is what makes those numbers achievable.

Beyond the wattage: what makes office lighting good

Good LED workplace lighting is more than low watts — four things separate a comfortable office from a harsh one:

  • Colour temperature — the 4000–5000K cool-white band is the commercial standard; the scheme-approved panels we currently install run 5000K, a crisp daylight white suited to offices and retail. Warmer 3000K suits hospitality and lounge areas.
  • Flicker — quality LED drivers are flicker-free, which matters for screen-heavy work and anyone sensitive to it. Aging fluorescent ballasts are a common hidden cause of eye strain complaints.
  • Even coverage — panels spread light across their whole face instead of from a tube line, reducing the bright-dark striping older office ceiling lights show.
  • Sensors — occupancy sensors in meeting rooms, storerooms, bathrooms and corridors commonly cut those areas’ lighting use by a further 20–40%, because the honest truth is those rooms are empty most of the day.

Where the NSW scheme fits

Everything above is true anywhere. In NSW there’s an extra layer: most small businesses can have the upgrade itself heavily subsidised under the Energy Savings Scheme — panels and battens installed for a small co-payment, with the certificate value covering most of the cost.
